How Do I Apply For Voicemail?
A standard subscriber voicemail box can be requested here. You need to provide your extension number, your first and last name, organisational unit and email. Your request will be allocated a LANDesk job number.
For any further enquiries and additional voicemail requests, or to arrange modification for existing voicemail boxes, you can call the Telephone Helpline on extension 51000 or send an email to Voice Operations.
Note - Meaning of the 'Extension not available' Prompt
When a staff member or external party calls a University extension and encounters the following message: "Extension ##### has not been activated. To transfer to the operator, press '0', or at the tone, begin recording your message. To stop recording, press any key"; this does not mean that the handset is not activated, but rather the new voicemail account associated with the extension has not been activated.
In order for an extension's voicemail to function correctly, it must be activated. A step-by-step activation guide can be found below.
How Do I Know I Have Voicemail?
Lift Handset and dial 51122 (the Voicemail system pilot extension number), if you hear the system state "please enter your security code", then you have a Voicemail account allocated.

Upon using your voicemail box for the very first time only, you will hear a special getting started tutorial.
- Call the same voicemail main pilot number – 51122, and follow the prompts.
- Create a new Security Code (PIN), using a temporary Security Code which will be provided when you request a new voicemail service.
- Record their first and last name for your new voicemail account.
- Record a new “greeting” for your voicemail account. This is for the greeting which a caller receives when your extension is call-forwarded to voicemail.
- Ensure any call forwarding on your handset to the voicemail pilot (51122) remains in place. Call forward busy/no answer is recommended.
Phone set up for voicemail
Set your phone (handset) to call forward busy/no answer to the voicemail pilot number, 51122. If your phone is busy or a call rings for approximately 12 seconds without being answered, the call will be redirected to voicemail. It is not recommended that you set your phone to “call forward all” incoming calls to voicemail.
IP Handset/ Digital Handset:
To set a call forward busy/no answer on a digital or IP handset, press the ‘FWD NANS’ key, then enter 51122. ‘FORWARD SET’ will display on your LCD screen and the FWD NANS key will light up. To cancel the call forward, press the FWD NANS key again.
To set a call forward busy/no answer on an analogue handset, press the * and “2” keys and then enter 51122. A confirmation tone will then be heard. To clear the call forward, press the # key, then the ‘2’ key.
