Several users of the new iOS 8 and iOS 8.0.2 have been experiencing higher than usual data usage. This seems to be a common issue for many iOS 8 users globally.

Please take a look at the steps below to help manage data usage.

  1. Settings > Mobile > turn off Data Roaming
  2. Settings > Mobile > under Use Mobile Data for > turn off any Apps that you don’t need to access to when NOT on WiFi.
  3. Settings > iCloud > Documents & Data > turn off Use Mobile Data
  4. Settings > iTunes & App Store > under Automatic Downloads > turn off Music, Apps, Books
  5. Settings > iTunes & App Store > turn of Use Mobile Data
  6. Settings > General > Background App Refresh > turn off any Apps that you don’t want to automatically refresh
  7. Lastly, if you don’t need email notifications constantly pushed to your phone: Settings > Mail, Contacts, Calendars > Fetch New Data > turn off Push
  8. Secondly Lastly, WiFi is your friend!!

Getting Started

New iOS devices (iTouch, iPhone or iPad) need to be activated by Apple before they are usable. The introduction of iOS5 has added support for activating devices wirelessly, however this method isn't supported. Please follow the following steps to do the one time activation of your iOS device.
 
What You Need to use iPhone, you need:
 

A Mac or a PC with a USB 2.0 port and one of the following operating systems:

  • Mac OS X version 10.4.10 or later
  • Windows XP Home or Professional with Service Pack 2 or later
  • Windows Vista
  • Windows 7
  • Display resolution on your computer set to 1024 x 768 or higher
  • Download latest version of iTunes, available at www.itunes.com/download
  • An iTunes Store account (for purchases from the iTunes Music Store or App Store)
  • An Internet connection for your computer (broadband recommended)
 
 

Registering your iPhone

  1. First, turn on your device, and open itunes on your computer. Make sure you are logged onto the quota management system to allow your computer to access the internet. You should be greeted with the following screen on your device:
  2. Plug your device into your computer using the supplied USB cable. Itunes should recognize the iPhone when connected:
  3. Itunes will then communicate with the activation servers, when your device is active you will see the following in itunes:
  4. At this point your phone should prompt you to unlock the SIM if there is a PIN code, otherwise it will connect to the telephone service provider. You can tell its connected by the telephone providers logo and signal strength in the top left corner of the screen:
  5. At this point your iOS device will be activated. You can continue setup via itunes or via the on-screen instructions on your device to setup your personal settings. If setting up via the device menu, when prompted for a wireless connection, skip past it by clicking next. When prompted for an iTunes login, skip that step by clicking the link in the lower right corner of the screen

You should now have your home screen displayed. Open Safari and browse to https://archive.its.uq.edu.au/helpdesk/ios/

 
You will then have the option of installing 3 profiles, one for Wireless Access using eduroam, one for UQ Exchange email and finally a profile for UQ remote access VPN setup. Follow the on screen instructions to complete the setup for these.
 
During setup of your device, itunes may prompt to update carrier settings. If you are prompted, we recommend allowing itunes to install the update.
